RIP Papa

Kristies Grandfather, known and referred to in our family as "Papa", passed away today.

I don't know a lot about him. He wasn't very mobile as far as coming to Toronto goes, so I only met him a handful of times. I do remember him being vibrant and clever, and we bonded over English Premiere soccer this past Christmas. My friends all remember him as the hilarious old man that was trying to pick up women less than half his age at our wedding reception last year. Simon in particular loved him for that.

Sadly, his body was riddled with Cancer from his days as a welder and steelworker, and it finally caught up with him. So, it wasn't a surprise, but that doesn't make it any easier.

We managed to get him to record a video greeting to Max on my phone this Christmas, and if I can figure out why my computer doesn't recognize my phone as a device anymore, I'll get it up.

Sad day here.

Let's not unman each other--part at once;
All farewells should be sudden, when forever,
Else they make an eternity of moments,
And clog the last sad sands of life with tears.

- Lord Byron (George Gordon Noel Byron)

Farewell, my friends! farewell, my foes!
My peace with these, my love with those.
The bursting tears my heart declare;
Farewell, the bonnie banks of Ayr.

- Robert Burns

Don't be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends.
- Richard Bach

Come, let's have one other gaudy night.
Call to me. All my sad captains.
Fill our bowls once more.
Let's mock the midnight bell.

- William Shakespeare

A sprig of heather; a pint of bitter;
the wind at your back, old father.
A Scottish communion, these things we wish you,
we will partake of, in your remberance.
A Good journey, and we'll see you by and by
The pipes will play, and we'll see you by and by
- Me
